Spofforth Secures Olympic Nomination

Posted on 05 Apr 2008 at 20:04 by Chris Lambert (Swimming)

Portsmouth Northsea's Gemma Spofforth won the Womens 100m Backstroke Final at Ponds Forge this morning to become British Champion and win a place on Team GB at this summer's Beijing Olympic Games.

Spofforth set a new British Record in yesterday's heats to become one of five swimmers reaching the required standard for Olympic Nomination. With just two places on offer the final was hard fought but Spofforth went under a minute for the second time in 24 hours to secure nomination. Team mate Katy Sexton missed out on nomination after finishing third to Elizabeth Simmonds (Lincoln).

Update: Spofforth today claimed a second Olympic nomination after finishing second in the final of the 200m Backstroke.
